Voters are likely to support former President Donald Trump’s plan to impose a 10% tariff on all imports to protect American jobs and wages, a new poll finds. .
President Trump announced an economic nationalist platform last year that included imposing a 10% tariff on all imports into the U.S. market. The tariffs are intended to protect American industries that were previously decimated by free trade, which hollowed out the nation’s heartland and helped move wealth to the coasts.
a poll JL Partners and DailyMail.com show majority support for President Trump’s plan, with about 54% of likely voters saying they support 10% tariffs.
Meanwhile, less than 20% said they opposed President Trump’s plan, and just 6% said they “strongly” opposed tariffs.
“Voters don’t care about economic details,” said James Johnson, co-founder of JL Partners. daily mail. “For them, it’s an instinct, a general imperative to protect America and impose tariffs when other countries don’t act fairly.”
“While European capital and businesses may be shivering at the idea of Trump 2.0 on tariffs, the American people welcome this policy,” Johnson said.
The poll highlights a problem for President Joe Biden, who has joined forces with Wall Street, big business and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to slam tariffs.
This week, washington post In an op-ed, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) outlined the need for Republicans to fully support a national industrial policy that replaces “unfettered free trade.”
“There is a temptation, especially among Republicans, to respond to the Biden administration’s failures in economic efforts by returning to the old consensus, to resume pre-2017 economic thinking,” Rubio wrote. “But that mindset is why our industrial communities are dying and our military is at risk of exhaustion.”
