The city of Madison, Wisconsin, used taxpayer dollars earmarked for the city’s emergency COVID-19 relief package. Fund services for illegal immigrantsaccording to a recent study conducted by the Institute for Government Reform’s Investigation and Monitoring Center.
IRG’s reportwas announced Thursday, revealing that the city has approved a “$700,000 budget for ‘illegal alien services.'” letter State Sen. Dewey Strobel (R) to the city.
The money was part of the city’s State and Local Financial Recovery Fund, which received money from the federal American Rescue Plan Act to support public health emergencies. The taxpayer money was “intended to help residents recover from the pandemic,” the IRG noted. Instead, the study found that 10% of SLFRF funds went to organizations serving undocumented immigrants.
The city reportedly approved funding for the fourth quarter of 2023.
“This quota for illegal immigrants is concerning because you note that these people are often ‘ineligible’ for ‘direct assistance’ in many cases,” Strobel said. he continued in his letter to the city.
State senators have been redirected to include a list of grant applications received by the city, a list of rejected grant applications, and a “breakdown of what the $700,000 grant was used for (i.e. direct cash).” requested additional information regarding the COVID-19 Relief Fund (such as “aid, gas cards, utility assistance, legal representation, etc.”).
Mr. Strobel requested an estimate of the time required for the public records request.
In a post on X on Thursday, Strebel noted that according to Madison’s fourth-quarter report, “pandemic funds could be used to pay for utilities, gas cards, etc.”
“At a time when Wisconsinites are struggling to keep up with inflation, it’s outrageous that our tax dollars are being used to help undocumented immigrants pay their bills,” he added.
“Hardworking Wisconsin taxpayers have a right to know how their money is being used,” IRG said. “In particular, they will commit tax dollars to provide services to undocumented immigrants in 2024 to respond to and recover from the 2020 COVID-19 public health emergency.” It’s worth knowing how ‘necessary’ it was: ‘Nearly five years into the pandemic, services for undocumented immigrants are in line with program intent.’
