For Scotty Scheffler and his friend Sam Burns, this week at Augusta National could be a life-changing one for many reasons.
Not only is Scheffler, the 2022 Masters champion, seeking his second major victory, but he and his wife, Meredith, are expecting their first child later this month.
Burns and his wife Caroline, who are aiming for their first major victory, will have their own version of the joy in the coming days.
Golf Channel reported Monday night that Schaefer and Burns, both 27, will withdraw from the tournament if Meredith or Caroline goes into labor during the tournament.
Scheffler, currently ranked No. 1 in the world, is the favorite to win the first major of the 2024 season. The win comes just weeks after winning the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in March.
He celebrated winning the Players Championship with Meredith, whom he married in 2020.
“It’s going to be a pretty wild situation. I don’t think either of us are shocked yet, but it’s an exciting time as a family,” Schaefer said earlier this year. According to Golf Digest.
“It’s been a very exciting last seven months or so. We’re looking forward to having the baby hopefully come out strong and healthy and with a healthy mother and we’ll go from there.”
Scheffler tied for 10th at last year’s Masters, and Burns, a close friend, tied for 29th.
Burns, a five-time winner on the PGA Tour, turned professional in 2017 and is currently ranked 22nd in the world.
