Democrat claiming ‘inflation rates are down’ interrupted by higher than expected inflation report

On Wednesday morning, reality collided with Democratic lawmakers’ efforts to defend President Biden’s record on inflation.

South Carolina Representative James Clyburn spoke on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” about a recent focus group in which he accused the president of “gaslighting” on the economy. Although Clyburn acknowledged that people are worry about inflationHe said that the inflation rate has generally declined since President Biden took office.

“I’m sure from my own observations and conversations with people that there are concerns about things like inflation, but what we have to understand is that inflation today is about 40% of what it was then. That’s what happened when Joe Biden took office. So inflation has gone down, people’s incomes have gone up. Unemployment is trending down. And store prices have gone up. It seems like it’s more expensive, but people are actually making more money,” Clyburn said.

How it started… and how it’s progressing: Inflation-adjusted hourly wages are now lower than they were when Biden took office.

As he spoke, co-host Mika Brzezinski interrupted him to report on the news that inflation was rising faster than expected.

ABC host shocked by video demonstration of rising food prices over the past four years: “Awesome”

“So I’m going to verify that. I think the misinformation that’s out there is distorting the whole process. I don’t think social media is helpful. But there’s also a lack of validation that these voters feel. .And I’m going to bring in Andrew Ross.” Sorkin just got the breaking news: The consumer price index rose faster than expected last month, and inflation remains high. Brzezinski reported.

Shortly before the news broke, Clyburn denounced “disinformation” about inflation.

“So what we have to do is make sure people are seeing the Biden administration’s policies and how it’s impacting their daily lives, and not what they hear on social media. It’s about getting people to understand what’s real in policy.” One of the people in the focus group said social media, misinformation, disinformation, all of that is out there, and it’s how we is a battle that must be fought, and we must do a better job of fighting it more effectively. ” Clyburn said.

The Ministry of Labor said: On Wednesday, it was announced that the consumer price index, which broadly measures the prices of daily necessities including gasoline, food and rent, rose 0.4% in March from the previous month. Prices rose 3.5% year-on-year, exceeding the 3.2% recorded in February.

The segment referenced a focus group of undecided voters in battleground states who unanimously agreed that former President Trump’s economic policies were better than Biden’s, and even laughed when Biden claimed otherwise.

Omar, a Michigan voter who previously voted for Biden in 2020, said, “The point is, Biden needs to listen to the people, because when he talks about how the economy is doing, he’s talking about the stock market.” He doesn’t look at the issues of homelessness and unemployment.” He… doesn’t care how much it costs to go to the grocery store, and he’s literally gaslighting everyone in the process. ”
