Mexican Soldiers Arrest 20 Cartel Gunmen, Kill 3 in Coastal State Shootout

Mexican authorities have confirmed that 20 cartel gunmen have been arrested, three others killed and two more injured following a series of gun battles in the coastal state of Tabasco. The clashes followed a dramatic increase in cartel gunfights and targeted killings in the region.

This week, Mexican troops clashed with a large contingent of armed groups from the Jalisco New Generation cartel near the town of Centro in Tobasco state. A series of cellphone videos captured the moment of a gunfight that forced local residents to evacuate.

In the aftermath of the shootout, the military arrested 20 gunmen, including one woman, provided medical treatment to two others and killed three gunmen, the Tabasco state government said in a prepared statement. .

The violence in Tabasco state followed an apparent turf war between rival CJNG factions vying for control. In February, CJNG armed groups claimed to be fighting a CJNG faction affiliated with La Barredora. This is a group that was extorting, killing, and raping innocent victims. In the video, the CJNG claimed that it was not fighting the government, but hunting rivals.

Violence has continued to rise in the once-peaceful state of Tabasco in recent months, with a man killed Thursday in a murder at a popular shopping center in Villa Hermosa.
