Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.) said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week” that American women “will not be fooled” by former President Donald Trump’s state-rights position on abortion. Ta.

SMITH: Well, first of all, George, American women are not going to be fooled by Donald Trump and his comments about abortion. We know he’s in charge of what’s going on in Arizona and across the country. I think this is the most important thing when thinking about the upcoming elections.
As for the Comstock Act, yes, it’s a 150-year-old law that has long been relegated to the dustbin of history, but it’s still interesting to see Trump judges and even the U.S. Supreme Court address it. can. Therefore, we need to pay attention to this and do everything we can to protect people’s right to make their own decisions about their bodies and their lives.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Is there anything else President Biden can do right now with executive action to protect these rights?
SMITH: I really appreciate the president doing everything he can to protect people’s rights. And he’s currently fighting to secure the FDA’s authority to decide whether drugs like mifepristone are effective — something that some Trump judges in Texas will rule on. That’s not the decision, that’s what’s happening in the Supreme Court right now.
So I think they’re doing the best they can. All we have to do is win these elections so we can enshrine Roe’s protections into law.
STEPHANOPOULOS: You say that the American people will not be fooled by Donald Trump, but his position now is relatively clear that this should be a state-by-state issue.
Smith: Well, let’s think about what exactly that means. First of all, he said he was the person proudly responsible for overturning Roe. That’s what’s causing all of this chaos and cruelty for her, one in three American women who currently live in states where abortion is basically banned.
The other thing he said just a few days ago is that the bans in these states are working properly. So, ask a woman in Arizona or Texas if she thinks this would work for her. Because for her, this is not a political discussion. This is about her personal life and the decisions she can make about her own life.
