Critics lambaste MIT’s vice president for equity and inclusion over ‘race baiting’ social media post

Critics are slamming Carl Reed—Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s new Vice President of Equity and Inclusion — over comments he made on social media Sunday that critics have called “racist,” among other things.

The post is as follows:

“I just boarded an early morning flight wearing my @MIT gear. My seatmate looked at me and asked, ‘Basketball?'” I said, “No engineering!” What was it about me that made him think I was playing basketball or coaching basketball? ” Reid asked in a post accompanied by what appears to be a selfie of him on a plane.

Reid’s post had 7.7 million views, 29,000 likes and 14,000 comments as of Monday afternoon.

At first glance, quite a few of them didn’t look all that positive.

  • “Brother, are you an instrument? Because you played it yourself,” said another user. Said.
  • Another commenter said: “It’s good to be quick to accuse people who are friendly towards you of racism.” made a joke. “You must be tired.”
  • “They may have been trying to start a conversation with an innocuous question…and you interpreted it as ‘that’s racism!’ and from there,” said another user. I got it.. “Yes. That’s your responsibility.”
  • “This is why no one wants to talk to anyone lol,” said another commenter. concluded.
  • ”[Because] March Madness just happened and it looks like a good exercise?But why not try a racebait?” said another user. I have written. “God forbid anyone should try to find common ground with strangers.”
