Biden to hit Trump over tax policies in hometown of Scranton, Pa

President Biden will travel to Scranton, Pennsylvania on Tuesday to criticize former President Trump over his tax policies as he begins campaigning in Pennsylvania.

Mr. Biden is scheduled to begin three days of rallies in his hometown of Scranton to outline Mr. Trump’s three-point tax plan if he is re-elected to the White House.

He argues that the first point is that President Trump wants to lower taxes on billionaires by repealing the Affordable Care Act, which would give tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans. right. Mr. Trump said in November that he was “seriously considering alternatives” to Obamacare, and Mr. Biden used last month’s Obamacare anniversary to slam Mr. Trump’s record on health care.

The second point the president will make is that he wants to give large corporations a huge amount of tax money by lowering the corporate tax rate and extending the 2017 tax cuts. Mr. Biden’s tax plan would raise the corporate tax rate up to 28% from the level set by Mr. Trump’s tax cuts (21%).

Biden’s plan also includes imposing a 21% tax rate on multinational corporations, ensuring that multibillion-dollar companies pay at least 21% of their income in taxes. Meanwhile, President Trump’s tax cuts are tied to the 2024 election, with Democrats opposing a full extension of the law, while Republicans hope to extend it if they win Congress and the White House.

The president said the third point is that President Trump will eliminate $80 billion in funding for the Internal Revenue Service included in the Democrats’ anti-inflation law, so wealthy tax evaders will be able to pay their unpaid bills. They would argue that they want to be able to avoid it.

The bipartisan funding deal agreed to in January included $10 billion in cuts to the IRS during fiscal year 2024 and an overall $20 billion cut to the law’s IRS funding increases. . Republicans have set their sights on fundraising, vowing to keep it afloat even if they flip the Senate and capture the White House in 2024.

Biden’s tax plan includes pledges to prevent those making less than $400,000 a year from paying more than their federal taxes, require wealthy Americans to pay their share of taxes, and close loopholes that allow them to cut taxes. They will probably advertise that they have it.

In a memo released Tuesday, campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said Biden’s speech in Scranton “consolidated” the three-day swing, adding that growing up there “makes him feel better.” “I built a worldview of the world.”

“This speech will drive home a simple question that is likely to resonate strongly with voters who will decide this election: Do you think the tax code is better suited for the wealthy or the middle class?” has made it clear what he thinks the answer is, and so has Donald Trump,” she said.

While in the key battleground state of Pennsylvania, Biden will spend time in Lackawanna, Allegheny and Philadelphia counties. In 2020, Biden won Pennsylvania with 50% of the vote, a reversal after Trump won in 2016.

Rodriguez said the issues Pennsylvanians are aligned with Biden on are job creation and support for labor unions, protecting democracy and protecting access to abortion. He noted that Democrats won Pennsylvania’s Senate and governor’s races in 2018, Biden won Pennsylvania in 2020, and Democrats won Pennsylvania’s Senate and governor’s races in 2022.

She also noted the progress made in the last month regarding the campaign’s infrastructure.

She said the Pennsylvania Democratic Party opened 14 offices in one week, hired 1,700 volunteers and launched a major coalition across the state. These coalitions — Biden-Harris Support, Latino Support Biden-Harris, and Women Biden-Harris — launched nationally last month.

a Franklin & Marshall College Poll Earlier this week, Biden was found to have a 10-point lead over Trump in the state.
