On Tuesday afternoon, a 58-year-old elephant escaped from a circus and wandered the streets of Butte, Montana. The bloodless parade startled passersby and brought traffic to a halt, but ended peacefully in time for the show.
The Jordan World Circus has been touring the Treasure State for the past few days. It includes several elephants, including the escapee Viola. Viola is referred to by the name “tiger” in some reports.
Bill Melvin, general manager of the Civic Center, said:
Said The Daily Montanan reported that the giant creature was startled by a car backfiring. The African elephant hobbled about 100 yards away from the venue before her handler caught her and brought her back to the circus.
In that brief moment of elephant freedom, Viola staggered across Harrison Street and into a gas station parking lot, stopping traffic along the way.
Lisa Rogers, an employee at Town Pump on Harrison Avenue, said:
Said The Montana standard read, “I jumped into the air” upon seeing the beast.
“There’s never a dull moment working here,” gas station owner Josh Hanifin quipped, noting how fast the elephants moved.
Melissa Crosby, a real estate agent with a good view of the street, was just looking in as Viola passed by.
“I emailed my husband and he thought I was lost,” Ms Crosby told the Standard. “That was the high point of my day.”
Armando Royal, Viola’s caretaker for 22 years, said the elephant was bathing behind the Civic Center when a passing truck backfired on it.
“She was trying to get away from the noise,” Royal said. “I was nervous.”
The elephant adventure was over within 30 minutes.
“Of course the circus was very professional and they had a professional trainer, but he was really calm and the animals were calm, so they were able to get her back right away,” Melvin told the Daily -Told The Montanan. “It wasn’t as dramatic as you think.”
The damage was reportedly limited to the collapse of an old fence.
“Everyone got home safely,” Melvin added.
