Former President Trump renewed his appeal for presidential immunity in a post on Truth Social on Saturday, ahead of next week’s Supreme Court argument on his immunity claim in a federal election interference case.
“If the president is not granted immunity, every outgoing president will be immediately indicted by the opposition,” the former president said. Posted Saturday morning on his Truth Social account. “Without complete immunity, the President of the United States cannot function properly.”
The post comes after a judge in another case facing President Trump said earlier this week that he would not be able to attend oral arguments in the Supreme Court over his presidential immunity claim.
The New York judge overseeing the former president’s hush money case has taken action to prevent President Trump from attending arguments in the Supreme Court next Thursday. New York law does not allow defendants to skip any part of the trial without express permission from the court. The judge does.
More than a dozen retired four-star generals, admirals and other former military leaders filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court earlier this month saying they oppose the former president’s request for immunity in the criminal case. A group of former military leaders said in a prepared statement that President Trump’s claims “threaten the military’s role in American society, our nation’s constitutional order, and our national security.”
“The concept of such an exemption could endanger our national security and international leadership, both in general and in the context of the potential denial of election results,” the brief said. It’s dark. “Such threats are intolerable and dangerous, especially in times like these when anti-democratic and authoritarian regimes are on the rise around the world.”
