Plans to be announced today to improve accountability and transparency at Unruwa, the UN relief agency for the Palestinians, lead to an immediate UK decision to restore funding to the agency. It is expected that this will not be the case.
Britain joined 18 other countries in suspending funding to the agency after Israel claimed that 12 of its 30,000 staff took part in the October 7 attack on Israel. Almost all of these countries have recovered funding, and the UK government faces conflicting pressures at home over whether to take similar measures. The UK provided Unrwa with £35 million in the last financial year, including an additional £16 million for humanitarian assistance.
Some MPs from the ruling Conservative Party and strong supporters of Israel have written to Foreign Secretary David Cameron, saying they consider the agency too close to Hamas and that restoring funding would be morally bankrupt. He warned that it would become a form.
They argue that the task of food distribution can be taken on by other agencies, such as the World Food Programme, but others say Anruwa has infrastructure that no other agency can replace.
Please see here for the detail: UK unlikely to make immediate decision on funding Unrwa
