Video shows Arizona mother violently assault bus driver in front of 11 children: police

A Mesa, Arizona, mother has been charged with aggravated assault after she was caught on video punching a school bus driver multiple times for calling her daughter names.

The Mesa Police Department announced that 27-year-old Hermenegilda Marquez was arrested April 17 and charged with one felony count of aggravated assault on a school employee.

According to police, officers were dispatched to W. McKellips Street around 2 p.m. on April 11 after receiving a report that a Mesa Public Schools bus driver had been assaulted.

When officers arrived, they spoke with the victim, who appeared to have minor injuries.

Video released by police allegedly shows Marquez boarding the bus, yelling at the driver, then turning to face the back of the bus and calling out the child’s name.

Police said Marquez then turned his attention back to the bus driver and continued to yell and yell at the bus driver.

The bus driver told Marquez, who he claimed he had never spoken to, to get off the bus before picking up the bus radio receiver.

Marquez then swung at the victim, grabbed the radio cord and pulled it, telling the bus driver to “do something now” and get off the bus, police said.

There were multiple parents at the bus stop when Marquez boarded the bus. Some parents complained to the bus driver about not stopping at the correct spot, but Marquez filed another complaint.

“Are you talking about my daughter?” Marquez asked the bus driver, before he could be heard violently hitting her multiple times.

A man, identified by police as Marquez’s boyfriend, intervened and pulled Marquez from the bus.

But as she was being removed from the vehicle, she grabbed the bus driver’s hair with both hands, nearly pulling him from his seat, police said.

Police said there were 11 children still on the bus at the time of the assault.

Marquez left the scene, and after further investigation, police identified her as a suspect and interviewed her.

During the interrogation, police read Marquez her Miranda rights, and she allegedly exercised her right to an attorney immediately.

Police said they showed Marquez the video and then told her they would charge her with a felony because she was seen on the recording assaulting her. Police said she showed no emotion when she was informed of the charges.
