Rangers’ Max Scherzer pushes for umpire relegation system: ‘Rank the umpires’

Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer continues his efforts to return to a major league pitcher’s mound. Scherzer underwent hip surgery during the offseason, but was able to throw 52 pitches during his recent start of minor league rehab.

Although he gave up five hits and three runs in the game, how Scherzer’s body responds to his rehabilitation remains the main focus for him and the Texas Rangers.

Scherzer will need at least one more minor league start before returning to the Rangers. After Scherzer completed his rehab start at Triple-A Round Rock, he decided to take a look at some of the issues currently swirling around officiating across MLB.

Scherzer said he believes the majority of umpires are doing a good job, but noted that the system will penalize umpires who continue to fail to accurately call balls and strikes.

Umpires with poor ratings will eventually be demoted to the minor league level.

“We need to rank referees,” Scherzer argued. “Let’s rank umpires in the electronic strike zone. We need to talk about the bottom. Let’s call it the 10%. Whatever we want to declare bottom, we need to talk about demoting that umpire to the minor leagues.” there is.”
