The National Football League (NFL) has announced that players will be able to wear Guardian caps during games.
The Guardian Cap, a padded shell that goes over a player’s helmet, was introduced to the NFL in 2022 and required players at most positions to wear it in training camp in 2023. NFL.com I will report it.
NFL Executive Vice President Jeff Miller issued a statement earlier this year saying concussions have decreased by 50 percent since the introduction of the Guardian Cap.
“With two years of data showing a significant reduction in concussions among players who wore Guardian caps during practice, players will be required to wear the caps during games next season,” Miller said in a statement to ESPN. It will be allowed to do so.” “Additionally, this year we have introduced new helmets that offer protection equal to or better than other helmet models combined with the Guardian Cap. These developments continue our commitment to making the game safer for players. It represents significant progress in our efforts.”
To reduce risk for players and continue to drive innovation in equipment technology, the Guardian Cap has been approved for in-game use this season.

This came on the heels of the NFL banning the “hip drop” tackle, which has been controversial, with fans wondering if the NFL is moving toward a more passive, less physical game. It made me feel. (Related: NFL bans ‘hip drop’ tackles, shows how soft the league has become)
The NFL clearly wants the sport to become more high-level and less violent. This manifested itself in punishing defenders for harmless tackles, officials becoming more prone to throwing flags for physical plays, and even turning the Pro Bowl into a flag football game.
I’m all for player safety, but this seems like it’s going to go into something more. I’m sure the NFL will mandate these caps in a few years.
Like many others, the sport I grew up watching and playing is gone, but only time will tell if that’s a good thing.
