Ads on Facebook, Instagram for explicit ‘AI girlfriends’ prompts Meta crackdown

The social media giant was forced to remove explicit content from its platform in recent days after tens of thousands of racy artificial intelligence-generated “girlfriend” ads were discovered across Metaapp.

investigation by wired An investigation released last week found more than 29,000 instances in Meta’s ad library containing ads for “AI girlfriend” apps on Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. The ad was for a chatbot that exchanged sexually explicit messages and displayed AI-generated images of scantily clad women in suggestive positions.

More than half of the ads included the acronym “NSFW,” which stands for “Not Safe at Work,” warning that the content is inappropriate for viewing at work, the report said.

Wired said the ads appear to violate Meta’s policy against adult content, and that when it contacted Meta about the issue the previous week, it said about 2,700 of the ads were active.

“When we identify violating ads, we work to remove them as quickly as we did this time,” Meta spokesperson Ryan Daniels told the media. “We continue to improve our systems, including ways to detect ads and behavior that violate our policies.”

Daniels issued a similar statement Wednesday when contacted by FOX Business, adding that Meta has reviewed the ad and removed it because it violates its adult content advertising policy.
