Principal replaced and officials on leave after viral video shows drag queen performing at New Mexico high school prom

School officials are furious after parents learned that a drag queen performed at a New Mexico high school’s prom.

Albuquerque Public Schools Superintendent Channel Segura confirmed to parents that the drag queen performed at Atrisco Heritage Academy on April 20th.

A video circulating on social media showed the drag queen, whose stage name is Mishika Sarleen, dancing provocatively as students stood in a circle.Students who participated in prom told KOB-TV They weren’t offended by the performance, they said, but they felt it crossed a line and made them uncomfortable.

Parents were outraged by the performance and demanded that the executives who approved the performance be fired.

Valentin Trujillo, a parent of two students at the school, said: “It was very inappropriate for the kids to see that. I think it belongs in a club, a night club. It’s not something that you see.” Go to KOATTV.

“My daughter has never been exposed to anything like this. She was so traumatized by it that she left prom early. We have to fill out permission forms for these kids to do everything. Why weren’t we told about this?” another parent told KOAT.

Five days after the performance, the school district announced in a letter to parents that Anthony Lovato had replaced Principal Irene Cisneros. A number of other school employees were also placed on administrative leave.

The drag performer, whose real name is Dylan Payan, told KOB that he has worked with the Gay-Straight Alliance for many years and that his performances were approved “through appropriate channels.” He said he was not paid for his appearance.

Payan was also angry at the reaction to his performance, as he claimed that people had sent death threats to him and his employer.he said new york times He said he had previously performed at the school three times and had no negative reactions to those events.

“At this point, it’s just turned into a hate crime,” he said of the threats. “What message do you want to send to the children?”

School officials said they are still investigating who authorized the performance.

KOB also confirmed that the drag performer had been arrested on multiple charges, including false imprisonment in 2023, but those charges had been dropped. The New York Times did not mention these arrests in its report.
