The White House has a new curator, with Donna Hayashi Smith becoming the first Asian American to hold the post.

The White House announced her appointment Wednesday, the start of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

Hayashi Smith, a native of Wahiawa, Hawaii, joined the White House curatorial office in 1995 and has served under five presidents. She started acting last year after her predecessor Lydia Tederick retired.

Hayashi Smith will lead the Office of the Curator in 2022, navigating the process to ensure the White House continues to be recognized nationally as an accredited museum.

First Lady Jill Biden cited Hayashi Smith’s accomplishments under five presidential administrations and said she looks forward to working with her to preserve the “living history” of the White House.
