Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) said Wednesday he is “skeptical” that former Vice President Pence’s life was at risk during the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol. .
CNN’s Caitlan Collins told “The Source” that the Ohio Republican might consider former President Trump as a running mate because of how the former president treated Pence. “Did you hold it back at all?” he asked Vance. Vance pivoted his response to his concerns about President Biden before Collins repeated his question.
Asked again if there was a “respite” for Vance to potentially become Trump’s vice president, Collins said Biden “didn’t approve of the opportunity to hang the vice president, and he didn’t approve of the chance to hang the vice president, and he didn’t want to leave the Capitol.” “He didn’t call the vice president when his life was in danger.” president. Mr. Vance earlier said he had not spoken to Mr. Trump about being a possible running mate.
“Well, I’m really skeptical that Mike Pence’s life was ever in danger. I think politics and politicians sometimes like to overstate things,” Vance replied.
After Collins interjected and said he thought “Mike Pence would object,” Vance continued.
“And a lot of people in the Democratic Party, Kaitlan, are acting as if it’s January 6th.th It was the scariest moment of their lives,” Vance continued. “I think January 6th was the worst day. It was a riot. But the idea that Donald Trump risked someone’s life when he told them to protest peacefully is just ridiculous. ”
Collins then noted that some in the mob were chanting, “Hang Mike Pence!” January 6, 2021. The vice president was at the Capitol that day to oversee the certification of the 2020 election when a mob stormed the building.
“Well, Caitlan, did some people say bad things? Of course. But do we blame Donald Trump for everything a participant in American democracy has ever said? That’s ridiculous “I think that’s the standard,” Vance said.
The Secret Service confirmed in 2022 that Pence was taken to an underground loading dock on January 6, where he waited for about five hours with his wife and daughter. The former vice president said in his book that he was angry but not afraid when the mob invaded the Capitol.
Pence condemned Trump’s actions on January 6 and defended his decision to certify the 2020 election results. The former vice president launched a strong bid for the White House last year, but dropped out last October.
