MSNBC host Nicole Wallace said Monday on “Deadline” that press freedom could be eroded if former President Donald Trump is re-elected in November.
“The annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner is one of the signs and symptoms of a healthy and functioning democracy,” Wallace said.
She continued, “This is unity, and at its core, a president who does everything right celebrates and respects freedom of the press. But behind that frivolity, there’s something darker. , there was a dark undercurrent, so to speak, and a talking point that the president had to make. And it was even more serious, because depending on what happens in November, seven months from now. Because we can’t say for sure whether there will be a White House Correspondents’ Dinner or even a White House Correspondents’ Conference at this very time, right? It could become another norm that explodes.”
Wallace added, “Depending on what happens in November, seven months from now, I may not be sitting here this time next year. There will be no White House Correspondents’ Dinner and no more freedom of the press.” It may not be that our democracy will collapse any time soon, but the real threat is much greater, not just to freedom of the press but to all of our freedoms and the rule of law. This is a candidate who superficially despises that.”
