Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass vowed Wednesday to prosecute pro-Israel vigilantes who attacked an illegal “Palestinian solidarity encampment” at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) overnight.
Bass said in a statement that he wants those involved in the reported violence to be held accountable. was taken It was carried out by both vigilante groups and pro-Palestinian activists, but only the vigilantes are said to have used fireworks.
Mayor Bass said:
This morning, I met directly with LAPD, LASD, CHP, CalOES, UCPD, and other local agencies at the UCLA Incident Command Center about last night’s absolutely abhorrent violence on campus. The Los Angeles Police Department is assisting local law enforcement with next steps to ensure student and campus safety.
There must be a thorough investigation into what happened on campus last night. Anyone who sets off fireworks, sprays chemicals, or physically assaults another person will be found, arrested, and prosecuted, as will anyone who engages in any form of violence or illegal activity. will be done.
I want to make sure that the message I conveyed to law enforcement and other officials earlier today is clear. Freedom of speech is protected. Violence and bigotry are not.
I would like to speak with Governor Newsom and thank him for his continued support.
For almost a week, Bass did not speak out against the illegal actions and violence committed by the camp’s residents, including the assault on the journalist and efforts to ban Jewish students and others from campus.
Newsom only made his first comments on the violence at UCLA on Wednesday, having remained silent for days while pro-Palestinian activists assaulted journalists and disrupted students, faculty and the public.
As Breitbart News reported, about 100 pro-Israel vigilantes attacked the barricades surrounding the “encampment.” That included both wooden barricades erected by activists and steel barricades apparently added by UCLA.
Los Angeles County Prosecutor George Gascon is notoriously lax on violent crimes. And Mayor Bass, not an activist, is preoccupied with the never-ending task of clearing encampments of growing numbers of homeless people.
update: UCLA President Gene Block has also vowed to discipline the students involved and supports the prosecution.
