Democrats appear to be divided over how to respond to the anti-Israel protests and encampments that have erupted across the country, particularly after the New York City Police Department (NYPD) raided Columbia University on Tuesday night. .
Some Democratic politicians, such as Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), have expressed gratitude that Columbia University “chose to come out and police it.” Some, like Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.), decry it. Police response to student “just exercising his First Amendment rights.”

Late Tuesday night, hours after pro-Palestinian demonstrators took over the university building, NYPD officers in riot gear launched an assault on Columbia University, smashing through the glass doors. They carried barricades and hung pro-Palestinian banners in their windows.
The raid was harshly criticized by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.). said He said if “children” were injured during the attack, “the responsibility lies with the mayor and Columbia University President Minoush Shafik.”
“Other leaders and schools have found safe ways to de-escalate tensions,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote. “This goes against leadership and puts public safety at risk. A nightmare unfolding. We urge the Mayor to change course.”

Bowman also criticized the police response to pro-Palestinian protesters at Columbia University, accusing the NYPD of “brutality” against the protesters.
“And for what? Just exercising your First Amendment right to peacefully assemble in protest of the collective punishment of civilians in Gaza,” Bowman said.
New York Mayor Eric Adams (Democrat) slammed Protesters took down the American flag from the flagpole and replaced it with a Palestinian flag.
