Columbia University announced Thursday that all classes and final exams will be conducted remotely for the remainder of the academic year, citing an “evolving” environment.
“To address our membership’s concerns in the evolving campus environment, all academic activities at the School at the Morningside Heights Campus will be conducted entirely remotely for the remainder of the semester,” President Angela Olinto said in a statement. (Including the carve-out below).” .
“Remaining class meetings, review sessions, or office hours should be held entirely remotely, and all final exams and other final assessments should also be conducted entirely remotely,” Olinto added.
The announcement came after New York City police arrested 300 people while clearing protesters who had occupied Hamilton Hall.
The decision came after Columbia University had already offered hybrid classes following unrest on campus.
The president asked the professor to “make it a take-home final, change the weight of the final, and adjust the grading policy so that the final exam does not have a negative impact on the final grade (i.e., a harmless final).” We encourage you to adjust your final exam. Make the final exam optional or cancel the final exam. ”
Professors will also have to work with students who have already left campus, as only students living in residential buildings on the Morningside Heights campus will be allowed on-site.
