University officials confirmed Sunday that one person died during the school’s graduation ceremony.
“Unfortunately, someone died after falling from the stands,” university representative Benjamin Johnson said, adding that the school had not provided further details.
The ceremony continued uninterrupted as news of the death spread among those in attendance. After the ceremony, students walked past the area where the incident occurred, where yellow crime scene tape was still attached.
University officials and commencement speakers did not mention the death during the ceremony. Social entrepreneur Chris Pang gave a speech about world peace and Bitcoin and sang the song “This Little Light of Mine.”
As of 8 a.m. Monday, neither police nor university representatives had released further details about the death.
Johnson said the university could not release information about the victim’s identity, including her age, gender and whether she was a student.
The Franklin County Coroner’s Office announced Monday that it is still working to identify the victim.
