Maine’s Democratic Senate candidate, Graham Platner, has come under scrutiny after a Reddit post resurfaced, where he suggested that, in certain situations, some individuals might need to be killed for the sake of tolerance and humanity. This was a statement he made back in September 2013 on his now-deleted account.
In his post, Platner expressed, “There are times in this world when you have to kill your mother for the sake of tolerance and humanity. Sadly, most people who truly believe in tolerance and humanity are disgusted by the act. I think it’s morally good, but practically it’s not good enough.” He was commenting on an attack by Antifa protesters against Greece’s far-right nationalist party.
Despite being largely unopposed during the Maine Democratic primary in June, Platner’s controversial remarks have raised eyebrows, especially with the aim of winning a Senate seat in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.
In addition, Platner claimed on Reddit in April 2020 that he was part of a local chapter of the Socialist Rifle Association. This organization seeks to counter the National Rifle Association and provides firearm training to those with left-leaning views. He had described President Trump and other Republicans as “fascists” and labeled himself as both a “socialist” and “communist” under the username “P-Hustle,” although he has since attempted to distance himself from these titles as he campaigns for the Senate.
His now-deleted Reddit history has sparked further allegations, including accusations of him mocking injured soldiers, saying they “didn’t deserve to live.” Platner has apologized for his past vulgar comments, asserting that they do not represent who he is today. “I hope people judge me for who I am now,” he stated.
Regardless of his politically incorrect remarks, Platner has expressed support for gay rights and condemned racism in his past comments. He attributed his use of coarse language to the “vulgar humor” developed during his time as a Marine in Afghanistan.
With recent developments in the state’s Senate primary, where Governor Janet Mills has withdrawn, Platner faces limited opponents as he heads toward the general election. Recent polling generally suggests that he may have an edge over incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins, who has historically performed well in past elections.
