Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) warned that if people choose not to vote in November, they will experience the “tragedy” of former President Trump being re-elected.
new USA Today interviewsaid the freshman senator is not worried about progressives threatening to drop out of the general election over the U.S. response to the Gaza conflict.
“Please. And if we get President Trump’s second term, we’re going to have to take that tragedy into our own hands,” Fetterman said. Fetterman, like President Biden, has lost some support within his party because of his unwavering support for Israel in the war.
Still, Fetterman said he believes voters will vote for Biden if they realize that a second term for Trump is possible and imminent.
“I believe in democracy. If they, the voters, turn their backs on the stove, that fire will flare up,” Fetterman said. “That’s the choice right now.”
His comments came as progressive groups urged voters in presidential primaries in several states to “irresponsibly” vote to “put political pressure on the Biden administration to reevaluate its stance on the Gaza war.” It was issued in response to a call.
More than 60,000 Pennsylvania voters chose write-in in April’s primary, according to USA Today.
The battleground states that went to Biden in 2020 will be the focus of this fall’s rematch between Biden and Trump. Although turnout in the primary was below average, Fetterman said he believes voters will vote for Biden at the polls.
“I believe the American people are faced with incredibly tough choices in this election,” he said.
Mr. Fetterman remains steadfast in his support for Israel and his determination to help Mr. Biden re-elect, despite criticism from voters that he is not the candidate they voted for on his response to the war. .
