JD Vance defends Trump from question about antisemitism

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) responded to former President Trump’s recent comments about Jewish Americans who voted for President Biden, suggesting that to him it was a “reasonable argument.”

CNN’s Dana Bash pressed Vance about former President Trump’s recent comments, in which Trump once again attacked Jewish Americans who are considering voting for Biden. Vance, who is a potential running mate for President Trump, dismissed the remarks and suggested people consider Trump’s record on Israel.

“Looking at this situation, do you think it’s reasonable to say that if you’re a Jewish American who cares about the state of Israel and about anti-Semitic violence, you should be on the side of the Republican Party in 2024? They? has been governing effectively on some of the issues that you care about, and I think that’s a perfectly reasonable argument,” Vance said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“And I think Donald Trump is going to continue to be successful,” he added.

Trump made several comments about Jewish Democrats on the campaign trail, saying in March that “Jews who vote for Democrats hate their religion and hate everything about Israel.” Ta. He made similar comments last week to reporters and on social media, and Vance responded on CNN.

“Mr. Biden’s actions toward Israel are shameful,” President Trump told reporters last week. “If Jews voted for Joe Biden, they should be ashamed of themselves.”

When pressed further about the comment, Vance continued to defend Trump.

“But he was making similar comments about many different groups of people, Dana. No one can look at Donald Trump’s actions as president and say that this person is somehow anti-Semitic. I don’t think so,” he told Bash.

Bash also pointed out that Trump “had dinner with Nick Fuentes, who is an avowed anti-Semite.” The former president had dinner with Fuentes in 2022, prompting backlash from both sides.

“Dana, you should look at Joe Biden’s record and realize that whether you are Jewish or not, his presidency has been a disaster for the American people,” Vance responded.

At the beginning of the interview, Vance urged people to look at Trump’s record, despite his recent statements.

“Well, Dana, I think people should look at the record here and realize that Donald Trump has actually done really good things for the state of Israel. “The country had peace and prosperity and a very strong ally in Israel.”

“Now Joe Biden is president. Israelis have been attacked. Terrible campus protests with many anti-Semitic overtones are taking place across our country, and we are demanding an Israeli response to the attacks. He’s trying to micromanage,” he added.

Pro-Palestinian protests have erupted on university campuses across the country in recent weeks, leading to arrests and the cancellation of numerous graduation ceremonies. President Biden has said he supports peaceful protests but has no place for anti-Semitism and violence.
