The White House has cited the pandemic and the war with Russia and Ukraine as part of the reason for President Biden’s lagging poll numbers in key battleground states as he concludes the final year of his current term.
White House press secretary Karen Jean-Pierre came up with this excuse during Tuesday’s White House press briefing when Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy asked about Biden’s alarming numbers.
A recent New York Times/Siena College/Philadelphia Inquirer poll found former President Trump ahead of Biden in Georgia, Nevada, and Arizona. The poll also found Trump with a 3-point lead among likely voters in Pennsylvania and a 1-point lead in Wisconsin. According to the Times, Biden leads Trump by one point in Michigan.
CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten called the poll results “an absolute disaster.” Biden narrowly won all six key states in 2020. If Trump wins these states in 2024 and retains the others he won from that year onwards, he will regain the White House.

“Why do you think Americans disrespect President Biden so much?” Doocy asked. “I know you don’t want to talk about polls like criminal defendants losing in five out of six battleground states, but in a broader sense, what you guys are doing is It doesn’t seem like it would be of any benefit.” [Biden] More popular. Why do you think that is? ”
Jean-Pierre said: “We understand that people, not just in this country but around the world, have had to deal with a pandemic and have had to come out of it.” You’re sensitive enough and tolerant enough to understand. We understand that you feel that way too.” Regarding gas prices, and because of President Putin’s war…that led to an increase in gas prices, and the president had to deal with a lot of things when he took office. Lots, lots of crises, and this is a president who took it very seriously. action. “
Jean-Pierre went on to list some of Biden’s biggest accomplishments as commander in chief, including the American Rescue Plan and the $1.9 trillion economic stimulus bill passed in 2021.
“Not a single Republican voted for it, but at the end of the day we have a fairer economy for everyone, working to make sure no one is left behind, 15 million jobs and less than 4% “to create unemployment rates of 1,000,” she claimed. .

He went on to say that his administration recognizes that some Americans are not seeing the benefits of Biden’s economic policies, and that Biden is trying to reduce health care costs and improve the Affordable Care Act (ACA). ) and promised to abolish junk fees.
Doocy then asked Jean-Pierre, “Why isn’t it working if you’re not doing anything to address their concerns?”
In response, the spokesperson said many of Biden’s policies, such as student loan relief and fighting big pharmaceutical companies, are “incredibly popular” with Americans.
“We understand how the American people feel. We understand what they’re going through. So, look, we know it’s going to take a little while. We understand that,” Jean said.・Pierre said. “That doesn’t stop us from talking about it, and it doesn’t stop us from talking about the contrast that we’re seeing from Republicans and Republicans who are trying to do the opposite of what the president is trying to do. ”Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. ”

“Even though there are Republicans blocking the president’s student loan plan from moving, student loans. In fact, it’s very popular with Americans. Fighting Big Pharma, it’s popular with Americans.” “Making sure that health care costs come down is what’s popular with Americans,” Jean-Pierre added.
He also praised new tariffs on China announced by his administration on Tuesday that increase tariffs on $18 billion worth of Chinese imports.
“So what the president is actually doing is the same thing that the vast majority of Americans want to do,” Jean-Pierre said. “Even when it comes to protecting reproductive rights, the Republican Party is not on the right side of history. Think about what extreme elected officials want to do. A president who protects what really entitles women, I certainly don’t agree with you about the difficult decisions they make regarding their health care. ”
