John Barnett, 62, worked for Boeing for more than half his life. Before he retired in 2017, he worked as a quality manager at the Boeing factory in North Charleston, South Carolina, where he was involved in the development of the 787 Dreamliner.
In recent years, Barnett has taken on a new role as a whistleblower for aerospace and defense companies.
Barnett’s lawsuit against Boeing says employees used “substandard” parts on Boeing 787s and management ignored failures to save money. . The whistleblower also alleged that the company illegally retaliated against him for reporting potential safety issues.
After Barnett failed to show up to complete his pretrial deposition, police conducted a welfare check and eventually found the Dodge Ram locked outside the Holiday Inn where he was staying on May 9. They found Barnett dead from a gunshot wound to the head inside his truck.
After months of wild speculation and innuendo, the Charleston Police Department announced on May 17 that it had closed its investigation into Barnett’s death.

CPD’s statement cited Charleston County Coroner Bobby Joe O’Neill’s final autopsy report, which showed all findings were consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

- The footage also shows Barnett’s truck backing into the parking lot minutes later, where it remained until the next day.
- Security camera footage showed no sign that anyone other than Barnett had contact with his truck.
Investigators also found what appeared to be a suicide note with only Barnett’s fingerprints inscribed on the passenger seat of the truck.
