A majority of Americans say they are likely to watch the first presidential debate next month, according to a survey released Wednesday.
Former President Trump has accepted President Biden’s offer to debate ahead of the November election. The first debate is scheduled for Thursday, June 27th.
by Quinnipiac University The survey found that 72% of voters said they were likely to tune in to the first debate, which will be hosted by CNN.
27% of voters said they were unlikely to tune in.
Biden said last week that he accepted a CNN debate offer and challenged Trump to take to the stage. The 45th president famously skipped all of the Republican primary debates, instead campaigning.
The June meeting will be the first round of discussion since the fall 2020 meeting. The June debate will take place much earlier in the calendar year and election cycle than in previous years.
Trump, who holds a fairly stable lead in national polls despite the ongoing legal battle, said he is “ready and willing” to debate Biden.
The two potential candidates agreed to a debate in June and a second debate hosted by ABC on September 10th.
Trump has since called for Biden to take a drug test before the first debate, claiming that Biden was “totally turned on” during his high-octane State of the Union address in March.
Trump has also consistently criticized the president for his age, even though the June debate took place after Trump’s 78th birthday and they are only three years apart in age.
The Quinnipiac poll was conducted among 1,374 voters from May 16 to May 20 and had a margin of error of 2.6 percentage points.
