Seattle man has casual response after leading police on dramatic chase: ‘Can I get a cigarette?’

Body camera footage released by Seattle police shows them spotting a man in a stolen car, attempting to stop him from fleeing, chasing a man who hit two people in a tent, and finally finding a man hiding in a dumpster. The moment he was arrested is shown.

According to police, the incident happened around 5:40 a.m. on May 5, when officers spotted a suspected stolen vehicle with a man asleep in the driver’s seat near South 6th Avenue and South Snoqualmie Road. Body camera footage showed officers placing multiple tire deflation devices under the wheels of what appeared to be a white Toyota Camry.

Police announced the deployment of a “Terminator device” to give the unidentified suspect a chance to comply voluntarily, but the suspect still sped away, suffering three punctured tires, police said.

A pursuit ensued and the 30-year-old suspect was seen punching a tent that was occupied by people. Police said two people in the tent were injured and others jumped out of the way to escape injury.

The unidentified suspect continued to flee from officers at high speed until the vehicle stopped. The suspect was then seen jumping over a fence before hiding in a trash can. He was found near a kindergarten and ordered to stand up.

Despite the dramatic chase, the suspect adopted a rather casual demeanor when he turned himself in.

“Can I buy some cigarettes or something?” the suspect asked as officers ordered him out of the trash can before making his arrest.

In response to the command, the suspect said, “I’m leaving. Calm down.”

Police said the suspect was legally prohibited from owning a firearm, but a gun was found somewhere along the route of the vehicle. The vehicle was towed from a freeway on-ramp where the suspect had left it.

The two people who were struck by the vehicle were treated for injuries at the scene.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of assault by motor vehicle, unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a stolen vehicle.
