Veronica Garcia, a transgender high school runner from Washington, competed in the girls’ 400-meter race on Saturday.
Garcia won the tournament and became the Washington state champion in the girls’ 400 meters.
Garcia ran the race in 55.75 seconds, one second faster than the second-place runner’s time of 56.75, according to the Pacific Northwest Athletic Association track scoreboard.

The second and third place finishers in Saturday’s race appeared to take part in the post-race awards ceremony.
According to Washington State High School Activities Association policy, all athletes will compete in the program “that matches their gender identity or the gender they most consistently express.”

No medical or legal requirements are listed, but WIAA policy states that students have the right to appeal if questions arise about their eligibility. State bills have been introduced to allow transgender girls to participate in girls’ and women’s sports, but have not yet passed.

In 2021, British Journal of Sports Medicine Transgender women maintain advantages over biological women even after a year of hormone therapy, a study has found.
“At the Olympic level, at the elite level, I think two years is more realistic than one year,” Dr. Timothy Roberts, director of the adolescent medicine residency program at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., told NBC News at the time. “At one year, transgender women still have an advantage over cisgender women, on average.”
