Hamas fired rockets at the Tel Aviv area on Sunday, the first time in four months that a barrage of fire has reached central Israel from Gaza, underscoring the importance of Israel’s fight against Hamas in its last stronghold.
The rockets targeted neighborhoods north and west of Tel Aviv, including Petah Tikva and Herzliya Pittuak, among Israel’s wealthiest communities, according to Cumta, an app that distributes warnings from Israel’s Red Alert System.
The Israel Times I got it. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that a prediction made last week has come true: “The Times of Israel reported last week that the IDF believes Hamas has the capability to launch rocket attacks from the Rafah area into central Israel, and that the terror group is likely to carry out such an attack if forces advance further into the city.”
No injuries were reported, but several rockets fell on the square, damaging one building.
Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces reported that a rocket launcher aimed at the Keren Shalom humanitarian checkpoint, which was targeted by Hamas late last month, had been found in Rafah, as well as rocket parts at a school in northern Gaza.
The Israel Defense Forces said in a statement:
The IDF continues to operate in the Jabaliya area, where they conducted a targeted intelligence-based raid on a weapons storage facility located inside a school and discovered dozens of rocket parts and weapons, further evidence of the Hamas terrorist organization’s systematic use of civilian infrastructure for its military operations.
During targeted operations in the Rafah area, terrorist operatives attempting to attack the IDF were eliminated. During reconnaissance of the area, the IDF discovered tunnel shafts and a large amount of weapons, including AK-47s, RPGs, grenades and explosives. Additionally, two rocket launchers in the Rafah area aimed at Kerem Shalom were attacked during the night.
The Israel Defense Forces also continued operations in the central Gaza Strip, clearing a large number of terrorists from the area the previous day.
Over the past day, the Israeli Air Force struck and destroyed more than 50 terrorist targets across the Gaza Strip, including military installations, weapons storage facilities, missile launchers, observation posts, terrorist cells and other terrorist infrastructure.
Fighting with Hamas in Rafah continues despite a ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Friday that Israel must halt its operations and refrain from attacks that pose danger to civilians.
