We’ve ‘Done an Extraordinary Job’ Dealing with Migration

In a segment of an interview with CBS News immigration and political correspondent Camilo Montoya-Galvez conducted last Thursday and published Tuesday, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said the Biden administration has “done an extraordinary job dealing with unprecedented levels of migration,” but that the unprecedented levels of migration are due to other factors.

Mayorkas responded to claims that the Biden administration is encouraging people to come to the border by saying, “That’s false. When you look at the overall migration problem, not just at our southern border, the levels of migration across the Western Hemisphere are unprecedented. And globally, we’re at the largest displacement, migration levels since World War II. I believe there are about 73 million displaced people in the world. The reasons people leave their countries are, as we all know, extreme poverty, violence, extreme weather, corruption, oppression by dictatorial regimes.”

He also said, “Camilo, we’ve done an extraordinary job dealing with unprecedented levels of immigration. The reality is, there are certainly people who are trying to game the system. … And we are dealing with that accordingly. And the point is, the defeat of a bipartisan bill for the second time today would have given us more tools to deal with those who are trying to game the system.”
