Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) said on MSNBC’s “Alex Wagner Tonight” on Thursday that the conviction of former President Donald Trump in the New York business documents trial was “a stunning vindication of the rule of law.”
“I’m very proud of this case because I feel it’s a beautiful vindication of the rule of law, the presumption of innocence, the need to get a unanimous verdict of 12 randomly selected citizens, the ability of a defendant to not have to testify and to choose not to testify, due process, the right of appeal and all the other complicated bits that frustrate people to delay things,” Raskin said. “If Donald Trump is convicted, he will no doubt appeal to exercise his right of appeal. He is well within his rights to do so.”
He added: “I think we should be proud that our liberal democratic system of justice and the rule of law has survived. It also made me proud to be a politician, because most politicians don’t behave like Donald Trump. Of course, the first time he ran, it was for the presidency, but that was an act of great arrogance and it paid off. Most of us do things for our constituents and then ask for their votes. We’re not doing this as an exercise in celebrity or glamour.”
