North Dakota Sen. Kevin Cramer says Joe Biden border proposal will hurt him with Democrats

Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-S.C., said border proposals that President Biden is expected to release this week could be damaging for Democrats.

Biden is expected to sign an executive order on Tuesday that will give his administration additional authority to limit the number of migrants coming across the southern border. Cramer suggested Monday that Biden is taking action on the border because it’s an issue that concerns voters.

“Then all of a sudden, five months before the election, he decides now is the time to do something about this. I think he’s beyond redemption on this issue and, frankly, he’s going to annoy his constituents more than he’s doing himself any favors,” Cramer said Monday on “The Hill on NewsNation.”

Cramer said Biden “knows he’s facing a big problem, and that the No. 1 concern of the American people is the crisis at the border,” and that the executive order “is an acknowledgment that something could have been done a long time ago.”

The White House pressed Senate Democrats to support a border security bill last month after Republicans first blocked it earlier this year, but the Senate rejected the bill last month, marking the second time the bill has failed to pass the Senate in recent months.

Republicans blocked efforts earlier this year to pass a national security bill that would have laid out provisions for the border, with Democrats and the White House criticizing Republicans for not voting for the bill despite former President Donald Trump’s opposition earlier this year.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, said Sunday that Biden’s expected executive orders are “too little, too late.”
