In today’s world, it seems like everyone gets a trophy, but the trophy is worthless. If you didn’t fight for it, if you didn’t work hard for it, it’s not yours. The same goes for freedom. I never had the freedom we enjoy in America, and I worry that I’ve wasted too much of my life. For what? For ease? For money? To get along? The trophies that everyone gets but that I never won?
I won’t accept that trophy, and I don’t want it. What I want is a trophy that means something – that means I stood up for something.
Defeat is not an outcome. Defeat is a choice.
On Thursday, we were given a chance to stand up for something: our republic. The government’s weaponization of Donald Trump’s campaign to thwart his election represents a larger assault on the fundamental freedoms on which our republic was built: the right to a fair and impartial trial, the right to free and fair elections, the right to defend oneself against accusers. Will you stand up for it?
Now is the time to decide, and our decisions may determine whether our Republic is headed for victory or defeat.
We will never say we’re done. We will never utter the words, “We lost!” Because defeat is not an outcome. Defeat is a choice. It is the choice of those who are knocked down and refuse to get up. It is the choice of those who retreat when faced with obstacles that seem insurmountable. The attitude of defeat is the attitude of those who retreat when faced with difficulties. Will you take that attitude? Or will you stand up for freedom and face the circumstances that our Republic demands?
It’s always the worst until you get to the top. The question is, when you’re driving a wagon train over the Rocky Mountains, do you keep going? Do you really have an unshakeable faith in our Republic? Do you really know the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution? Do you know why we fight? Because if you don’t, you will lose.
Will enough of us summon the fortitude that has always been within us? Will you stand up for the values that we have always been taught to be self-evident? Apparently, according to our ruling class, those values are no longer self-evident.
Our nation has developed the greatest mission statement the world has ever seen: that all people are “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness,” and that all can enjoy justice and liberty.
That is the top of the mountain we face now, and it is a summit worth pushing forward to reach. We are still on the slope of the mountain. We have a long way to go, and last Thursday they tried to push us back down. We must ask ourselves today: Will we just go back down? Is this where we should be? Or will we just say, “Forward, America”?
We must move forward, and not admit defeat, for if we do, we do not deserve the freedoms worth fighting for.
