Haason Reddick’s career with the Jets hasn’t gotten off to a good start.
After skipping optional OTA workouts, the Pro Bowl defensive end was one of two players to walk away from this week’s mandatory minicamp on Tuesday.
The other was Aaron Rodgers.
Redick, who was acquired from the Eagles in late March, is believed to be looking for a new contract.
Jets head coach Robert Saleh said he spoke with Redick over the weekend for the first time since the trade.
He wasn’t worried about Redick’s strike lasting into training camp, but the two didn’t discuss it or his contract situation.
“I appreciate the discussion, he is in a very good mental place and is working hard as we already know, but there are no excuses as he chose to sit out,” Saleh said.
He later added: “I’m not worried about Haason Reddick. I understand everything that’s going on, but at the same time, I know that when it’s time to play football, he’s going to be ready to play football.”
Redick, 29, is a two-time Pro Bowl selection who averaged more than 12.5 sacks over the past four years. He’s due to be paid $21.8 million in 2024 as part of a three-year, $45 million contract he signed before the 2022 season.
Saleh said questions about Redick’s new contract should be directed to general manager Joe Douglas.
The Jets had discussed contracts with Redick’s representatives prior to the trade and were under the impression that Redick would start the season on his current deal.

Breece Hall is excited about the Jets’ Week 1 opponent for a variety of reasons.
For example, his cousin is former 49ers star Roger Craig.
Hall looked up to running back Christian McCaffrey and San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy was his roommate at Iowa State.
“I used to watch his highlights all the time,” Hall said of McCaffrey, “and if you look at my YouTube history, you’ll see I watched like the first 10 of his highlight videos.”
Regarding playing against Purdy, Hall joked, “Me and him, we’re just too competitive with each other. Even in college, when we played Madden, whoever won, we didn’t speak to each other that day. It was like that until the end of the game.”
Saleh said he expects projected starting offensive linemen Morgan Moses and Aliyah Vera-Tucker to be ready by the start of training camp, and that he expects incoming receiver Mike Williams to be able to attend workouts on the same schedule as Hall, who returned from the PUP list in August.
Williams suffered a torn ACL last September but is now back on the court.
The Jets invited five players for the tryout: receiver Jaquem Grant, defensive linemen Jeremy Lewis and Takkarist McKinley, and offensive linemen Corey Luciano, Patrick Elflein and Irm Manning.
