Few supporters of President Joe Biden believe prioritizing marriage and childbirth would be beneficial to society, according to a Pew Research Center poll. found.
Just 19% of Biden supporters said society would be better off if marriage and childbirth were prioritized, compared with 59% of former President Donald Trump’s supporters and 39% of all registered voters. The results come as singlehood and loneliness are widespread among young people and the U.S. continues to experience its lowest birth rate in 100 years.
The survey found “modest differences” between men and women on whether a focus on marriage and child-rearing improves society.
“Nearly six-in-ten men (63%) who support Trump say the same, compared with 54% of women who support Trump. There’s a similar gender gap among Biden supporters (22% of men, 16% of women),” the survey said.
Breaking down the numbers by ethnicity, black Biden supporters (29%) are more likely to say society would be improved by emphasizing marriage and family than their Asian (20%), white (17%) and Hispanic (16%) Biden supporters.
Respondents were also asked about the country’s low birth rate. Voters overall had little to no interest in the country’s low birth rate, with 43% saying “fewer children is neither good nor bad for society.” Meanwhile, more than a third (35%) said the trend is bad, and 22% said having fewer children is a good thing for society.
Among Biden supporters and Trump supporters, Trump supporters are far more likely to view this trend negatively.
Nearly half of Trump supporters (47%), including a majority of Trump men (56%), say having fewer children is a bad thing for society. Roughly four in ten Trump supporters (37%) see the trend as a bad thing.
About half of Biden supporters said this trend is “neither good nor bad,” while 27 percent said it is a good trend and 23 percent said it is a bad trend for society.
The survey was conducted from April 8 to 14, 2024, with 8,709 respondents. The margin of error is plus or minus 1.5 percentage points.
