Dramatic new footage shows the moment gunfire rang out as a mob of teenagers overpowered police in a coastal community on Long Island.
Footage obtained by The Washington Post shows police gathering in a normally peaceful Long Beach neighborhood when eight gunshots are heard in rapid succession around 6 p.m. Thursday and officers rush to the source of the sounds.
Authorities said one person was shot during unrest on the city’s “Senior Skip Day,” when more than 2,000 teenagers flocked to the beach and surrounding areas, forcing local police to call in reinforcements from Nassau County police.
As police tried to control the crowds with little effect, rowdy teenagers were seen jumping on top of police vehicles and performing a twerking dance.
Other footage showed hundreds of people climbing onto lifeguard stands at the beach.
At least two teenagers were taken into custody, but police have not released details about them, such as their ages or the charges they may be facing.
Sources said police recovered a gun at the scene.
Police have not identified the victim or released details about his condition.
The incident occurred during an informal annual event where high school seniors from school districts across the region come together to skip class and celebrate the day.
