Cash-strapped New York City, which could spend up to $10 billion under its limits to address the immigration crisis next fiscal year, has agreed to pay $350,000 to a man who was held with others during a brief time in Rikers Island several years ago.
From June to July 2022, Ali Miles (real name Dylan, but currently Reportedly She identifies as a “Muslim transgender woman” and was incarcerated at Rikers Island men’s facility before being transferred to an Arizona prison where she is awaiting sentencing on the charges. Redux According to the report, Miles was ultimately found guilty of two felony counts of aggravated domestic violence harassment and several misdemeanors, including harassment and disorderly conduct, and was sentenced to 312 days in jail, with time served.
The lawsuit, filed last May, claims that a New York City yoga studio deprived Miles of his civil rights “because he is gay, has had sex reassignment surgery and does not conform to stereotypes about how men and women should dress and behave.”
The following year, Miles filed a lawsuit against the city of New York, alleging that Rikers staff knew he was female and that a judge had ordered him housed in the women’s unit at Rikers, but that the order was not followed. As a result, Miles allegedly endured “transphobic” remarks from prison staff, including some who complimented Miles’ “boobs” and “pussy,” despite the fact that he had not undergone genital mutilation.
The lawsuit also alleges that other inmates, specifically “African-American male” inmates, sexually assaulted Miles.
The original lawsuit sought $22 million in damages, but last week New York City officials offered Miles $350,000, ostensibly to end the litigation. Under the terms of the agreement, the city did not admit fault in Miles’ lawsuit and Miles cannot pursue any further legal action against the city over the matter, Reduxx reported.
Miles is suing businesses in New York City and Arizona for discrimination and other mistreatment because of his so-called gender identity, though the lawsuits often refer to him with male pronouns. The suit, filed last May, claims that a New York City yoga studio “deprived Miles of his civil rights because he is gay, transitioning, and does not conform to gender-based preferences, expectations, or stereotypes regarding how men and women should dress or behave.”
Miles also filed lawsuits against a bagel shop in New York City, a Planet Fitness facility, a Presbyterian hospital and a former employer in Arizona. Reduxx argued that the lawsuits were often “poorly written” and “riddled with spelling errors.” One lawsuit even referred to the plaintiff as “Mr. Miles” multiple times. Other lawsuits were dismissed after Miles failed to file proper paperwork and pay legal fees.
