Ad Wars: Trump and Biden campaigns take to airwaves and online ahead of and during presidential debate

While President Biden and former President Trump will face off on the CNN presidential debate stage in their first head-to-head matchup in the 2024 presidential election, the two sides will also be battling each other in an advertising war online and on TV throughout the day on Thursday.

The Biden campaign announced a seven-figure “media offensive” ahead of the CNN presidential debate on Thursday morning.

They say they plan to place ads on the websites of BuzzFeed, USA Today, CNN, El Tiempo Latino, Telemundo, The Grio and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution highlighting what they say are the dangers of electing Trump to a second term.

The campaign also featured a full-page ad in the print edition of USA Today.

“Today’s show of force in Atlanta and across the battlegrounds underscores the two contrasting visions the American people will see on tonight’s debate stage: a President Biden fighting for the American people, and Donald Trump focused solely on the interests of only one person in his campaign – himself,” Kevin Munoz, a senior spokesman for the Biden campaign, argued in a statement.

The Biden campaign, which has dominated the TV ad wars since the airwaves went dark after Trump won the Republican presidential nomination in mid-March, is launching new ads every day this week in the run up to the debate.

In the latest spot, first published by Fox News, Genesee County, Michigan, Sheriff Chris Swanson describes how he watched in horror as Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, and attacked Capitol Police officers.

AdImpact, a leading national ad tracking company, reported that the Biden campaign booked $2 million in ads on Thursday alone.

The Trump campaign announced Thursday morning that it would run two ads on the day of the debate, its first since the Republican primary ended more than three months ago.

The ad suggests that the president will not be in the White House for another four years and that someone they disparagingly call “sniffling Kamala Harris” is “standing by.”

The Trump campaign did not disclose how much it was putting into the one-day ad buy, but AdImpact said it had tracked just $100,000 in bookings from the Trump campaign.
