The Supreme Court ruled that the Biden administration can work with social media companies to censor views it deems dangerous.
“We all know the Biden administration is not going to censor the left.” Sara Gonzalez He expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict and said:
This decision Murthy v. Missouri State attorneys general accused government officials of working with social media companies in the name of fighting misinformation and disinformation, and they alleged that officials suppressed discussion about Hunter Biden’s laptop, the origins of COVID-19 and the effectiveness of vaccines.
The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals sided with the plaintiffs on First Amendment grounds.
The Justice Department then argued that this temporary ban on “public-private partnerships” would cause irreparable harm because it could prevent the federal government from working with social media companies to prevent “significant harm” to the American people and our democratic process.
The Supreme Court indirectly agreed with the Department of Justice by overturning the Fifth Circuit decision, with only Messrs. Alito, Thomas and Gorsuch dissenting.
They argued that “a government review of widespread social media communications is beyond the court’s jurisdiction,” that “allegations of past censorship are not sufficient to prove future censorship,” and that “plaintiffs’ alleged damages are indirect and anticipatory.”
For conservatives, the timing couldn’t be worse.
“If you’re going into an election as a conservative, this is really not a decision you want to make, just like all but one of the social media platforms want to censor your opinions,” Gonzalez said.
“The plaintiffs’ argument that they lack standing appears to me to be the most convoluted and spurious of all. How can past actions not be evidence of future actions? The Biden administration has a clear record of pressuring social media companies and major tech platforms to censor conservatives,” she added.
