Summary at the beginning
Hello and welcome to the Guardian’s live coverage of the French election results. I’m Helen Livingstone.
president Emmanuel MacronAfter the far-right National Rally (RN) party won the most votes in the first round of parliamentary elections, the centre-right coalition and the left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) coalition called for strategic voting.
prime minister Gabriel AttalHe is likely to be forced to resign after the second round of voting, warned that the far-right was now on the “doorstep of power” and said the RN must not receive “a single vote” in the second round.
“We have seven days to save France from catastrophe” Raphael GlucksmannA key figure in the left-wing coalition.
If the RN wins an absolute majority (which remains unlikely), it would be the first time in French history that a far-right party has won a parliamentary election and formed a government, and Macron would have to share power with the far right. If the RN wins the most seats but not a majority, Macron could find himself in a hanging parliament, unable to govern France, the EU’s second-largest economy and strongest military.
The French president stunned and bewildered his own government and supporters this month by deciding to dissolve parliament and call early elections after his centrist, pro-European coalition suffered a crushing defeat to the RN in EU elections.
As the first results came in on Sunday, he asserted in a statement that “this vote is important for all our compatriots and a desire to clarify the political situation.”
Key developments so far include:

-
However, national estimates from the first round of voting may not reflect the final breakdown of seats in Parliament, which will be determined by the results of elections in the constituencies.
