The Rev. Clemmie Livingston Jr. is the 71-year-old pastor of New Zion Field Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee. On February 25, Pastor Livingston attempted to stop assailants from stealing a car just feet from the church entrance. One of the assailants shot the pastor in the face as they fled the scene in his car, killing him.
After multiple surgeries, Livingston Said WREG-TV: “As I lay there I told myself I was going to die soon. Now, what can someone who’s bleeding the way I am say?”
“While I’m on my knees, let me say this. [God] “He told me, ‘Stop dying and start living,'” the pastor said. “In my mind and in my heart, I know that Jesus has saved me from this situation.”
The pastor’s wife, Gwendolyn Livingston, Shown Livingston announced Friday that he still wears facial braces and may need to undergo bone graft surgery or have a metal plate inserted in his jaw.
“I still can’t eat like a normal person and of course my bones are still broken,” he said. Said WHBQ Television.
The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office has given the pastor something else to be angry about.
Lushnio Greer, 18, was arrested in May in connection with unrelated auto theft and aggravated assault cases. WHBQ report Investigators found photos of Greer in the victim’s 2019 Corvette. Greer allegedly admitted to being at the scene of the robbery when the pastor was shot and to driving one of two Camaros seen by witnesses at the scene. That same Camaro was later wrecked during a police pursuit.
Greer was charged with a variety of offences, including robbery and theft.
However, the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office Steve Mulroya Democrat reputation Being soft on criminals Reportedly All charges against Greer in the Livingston case were dropped except for theft, as he had accepted donations from groups linked to Soros.
“I’m not going to let this get me down.”
Mulroy’s office claimed the charges were dismissed because witnesses failed to appear in court, but the pastor argued that’s simply not true. report WHBQ.
“I was surprised when they told me they knew we were there and there were no witnesses,” the pastor said. “That’s what shocked me.”
“I don’t get discouraged by things like this,” Livingston said, “and I believe the justice system is going to do what it wants to do anyway.”
After the pastor denied the allegations that witnesses had appeared before the press, Mulroy’s office indicated that the robbery charges had been dropped despite witnesses being present at the hearing, effectively admitting that the pastor had misled the public.
Livingston indicated he would continue to pray about the situation, hoping that the accomplices mentioned in Greer’s statement would be arrested. He expressed an interest in the rehabilitation of the attackers in custody.
Livingston’s case isn’t the only time Mulroy’s office has tried to punish criminals lightly in Shelby County. Mulroy recently suggested he would encourage rehabilitation rather than incarceration of felons arrested for illegal firearms, citing the need to address racial disparities.
Tennessee Senator Brent Taylor (Republican) Said “The idea that in a city plagued by gun violence, the district attorney would not aggressively prosecute felons who possess firearms is not only nonsense, it’s dangerous. Our county has been targeted by restorative justice groups who know that the district attorney is weak, compliant and acquiescent. This is not only hurting our community, it is harming law enforcement across the state,” WMC-TV said in a statement.
Taylor Notified Tennessee Lt. Governor Randy McNally (Republican) announced his intention to fire Mulroy last month.
“Because the public interest demands it, the reasons for such removal will be specified in the Senate Joint Resolution, but will likely include ‘dereliction of duty’ for failing to properly prosecute convicted felons in possession of firearms,” Taylor said in the letter.
Governor McNally responded with words of encouragement and said he “wholeheartedly” supports the cleanup effort, Tennessee Lookout reported.
“District Attorney Mulroy has a long and clear track record of refusing to prosecute laws that he has no personal interest in. I believe it is time for him to step down,” McNally said.
