Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas), an Army veteran, said in a recent interview that then-President Donald Trump warned Taliban leaders during Afghanistan withdrawal negotiations not to harm a single hair on “a single American” or he would kill them.
Hunt, a West Point graduate, recounted the story in a recent podcast interview. The Sage Steele Show. He recalled:
Let me give you one of my favorites [President] The Trump story. This is my favorite story ever. When President Trump was still president, when he was negotiating with the Taliban, he wanted to withdraw from Afghanistan, but he wanted a conditional withdrawal, which means that we would slowly withdraw our troops as long as they followed our instructions and followed our rules.
President Trump and Mike Pompeo were in a room talking to the Taliban leader. There was an interpreter in the room. President Trump looked at the Taliban leader and said, “I want to get out of Afghanistan, but I have conditions.” The interpreter translated that. And he said, “If you harm a hair on an American’s head, I will kill you.” And the interpreter said (Hunt mimics the interpreter), and Trump said… “Tell him what I said.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a satellite photo of the Taliban leader’s house and gave it to him. And he got up and walked out of the room.
Did you know that in 18 months, not a single American was killed in Afghanistan? That’s the definition of strength. … That’s what President Trump does.
Hunt shared a video of the interview on X, writing:
This is how President Trump dealt with terrorists, and it’s why not a single American soldier died in Afghanistan during his final 18 months in office.
President Trump has kept America safe by making our enemies fear us.
In a separate post, KT McFarland, a former deputy national security adviser to Trump, vouched for the story’s veracity.
She wrote to X:
This is completely true. Trump told the Taliban leader, “Don’t harm a hair on an American’s head,” or he would kill him. He then said, “I know where you live,” and showed him satellite photos of the Taliban leader’s house.
According to the Associated Press, in the negotiations to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan that President Trump initiated, No combat deaths in Afghanistan Between February 2020 and August 2021, President Biden ordered a disastrous withdrawal that saw the Taliban take Kabul and 13 American troops die.
The issue of deadly troops came up in the first 2024 presidential debate between Trump and Biden, with Biden falsely claiming he would be the first president this century to have no dead troops during his term. In addition to the 13 Americans killed during the withdrawal, three U.S. soldiers were killed in Jordan and two Navy SEALs were killed during an arms embargo mission to Yemen.
