Husband Mark Backes, 61, runs 3K miles from CA to NY to raise money for Parkinson’s Disease after wife’s diagnosis

A San Diego man ran 3,000 miles from California to New York to raise money and awareness for Parkinson’s disease research.

Mark Backus, 61, crossed the finish line at the Empire State Building on Saturday afternoon, completing a 92-day coast-to-coast journey on behalf of his wife, Mardell, who is battling a progressive disease, and his father, who lived with the disease for 10 years before passing away in 2018.

The entrepreneur began his journey on April 16th at Santa Monica Pier in California, with the goal of running an average of 30 miles a day without any outside support.

“Mark did this incredible run without any support from a team, crew or medical staff. He ran with an 80-pound cart on his back, dragging all of his equipment, including the tent he slept in most nights,” Tim Disler of the Michael J. Fox Foundation told The Post.
