Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said he was “concerned about national security” following Biden’s debate performance last month and said he believed Biden was “at risk” mentally.
Senate Republicans have expressed concerns about the president, Graham said in an interview with Robert Costa on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”
“Most of us are concerned about the national security impact of this debate about President Biden’s health,” Graham said. “Most Democrats are concerned about Biden winning the election. I’m concerned about Biden being commander in chief for the next four months.”
Biden’s poor performance in the debate has led to growing calls among Democrats for him to drop out of the presidential race amid concerns that he may not be able to beat former President Trump in November’s presidential election.
Graham also doubled down on his calls for Biden to take a cognitive ability test, which the president said he didn’t need in an ABC News interview on Friday.
“I would like President Biden to undergo cognitive testing,” Graham said. “I think that anybody who has a line of presidential succession going forward should undergo regular neurological testing.”
He later added that Trump should also be required to take a cognitive test.
“My predecessor, Senator Strom Thurmond, was a very dynamic man, but he was 100 years old. He was president pro tempore of the Senate,” Graham said. “This is a wake-up call for the country. We need to make sure that the people who succeed us are capable of serving as commander in chief in tough circumstances.”
“My concern is that our allies will see Joe Biden as compromised, and our adversaries will see Joe Biden as compromised,” he continued. “Judging by all the evidence before us, and he’s not just in denial, it’s a dangerous time for the American people to have the ship of nation led by someone who appears to be compromised.”
