The 2024 Republican Platform explicitly defends “fundamental freedoms,” including the “right to keep and bear arms.”
Article 7 of the Preamble to the 2024 Platform To tell“Let’s defend our Constitution, our Bill of Rights, and our fundamental freedoms, including freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the right to keep and bear arms.”
The 2024 platform has a shorter section on gun rights than the 2020 platform, but 2020 was a repeat of 2016, and some of the issues that were particularly important then are no longer at the forefront of the debate.
For example, the 2016 platform Said“We call for a thorough investigation by the new Republican Administration into the deadly ‘Fast and Furious’ operation carried out by Department of Justice officials who approved and condoned the illegal sales of guns to known violent criminals.”
It’s now 2024, and Fast and Furious, an Obama-era venture and therefore related to the 2016 platform, is no longer in the spotlight. The gun crimes that are now in the spotlight are those allegedly committed by President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter. (On June 3, 2024, Breitbart News reported that Hunter’s alleged crimes carry prison time and large fines.)
Additionally, presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has made clear his commitment to defending the Second Amendment against all odds.
On May 18, 2024, President Trump told an audience of NRA members, “Let there be no doubt about it, the survival of the Second Amendment rests on a vote. The Constitution is in danger.”
He continued, “We need the Second Amendment for safety. Forget about going hunting and everything else. We need the Second Amendment for safety, because the bad guys aren’t going to give up their guns. The bad guys aren’t going to give up their guns.”
