Andy Stout said in an email::

I really hope that the Tour de France riders can improve their form a little, but with 26km to go, 10 of which are climbing in the Hors Categorie, the race may continue for a while yet.

We will keep you updated if the stage does not finish in time. It’s such an action-packed sports weekend, it’s hard to see it all!

Andy Farrell will be in charge of Ireland for his 50th game today. He told Sky: “Milestones as a coach are not as valuable as milestones as a player. I didn’t realise that until someone told me a few days ago…”

“We are always looking for ways to grow our leadership group and our main challenge this week is to ensure we become better versions of ourselves.”

share

Rachie Erasmus spoke to Sky before the match.“Our motto is, if someone gets injured, we put the next guy in. That’s the way we do it.”

This comes after he said “six or seven” players who would normally start are currently injured – and today’s players have a record number of caps for a Springbok squad, showing the depth of the squad.

share

You may be wondering where Hugo Keenan is. It’s time to look at the squad sheet. The full-back has temporarily switched to the sevens game in preparation for the 2024 Olympics, which has given opportunities to Jamie Osborne and Ciaran Frawley this summer.

share

Garry Ringrose said in the run-up:“Being given the opportunity to play for Ireland is never something you take for granted and it motivates me to work hard, prepare and take on the process to be as ready as I can be so I can attack and give it my all in the game at the weekend.”

Ireland manager Andy Farrell“We’re sure South Africa will be twice as strong this weekend so we need to move pretty quickly this week in terms of honesty and where we stand, but if we perform the way we want to perform I think we’re very capable of winning.”

South African team today “I don’t really look at things like that when selecting my team, but it shows we’re blessed with depth and quality in the squad,” said manager Rachid Erasmus when asked about the incident before the match, making him the most experienced player in the club’s history with 990 caps.

“These are great statistics but they are by no means a guarantee of victory and we know we have to play good rugby for the entire 80 minutes to get the result we want.”
