MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin — Former presidential candidate Nikki Haley spoke at the Republican National Convention, urging voters who remain skeptical of former President Donald Trump to support him for president in 2024.
Haley, who previously served as governor of South Carolina to serve as Trump’s ambassador to the United Nations and ran against him in the 2024 Republican primary, was often seen by Trump’s supporters as a centrist establishment foil.
But his former rival told delegates in Milwaukee that “you don’t have to agree with him 100 percent of the time to vote for Trump.”
“I haven’t always agreed with President Trump,” she said, “but we agree more than we disagree.”
“We agree to keep America strong. We agree to keep America safe. And we agree that the Democratic Party has moved too far to the left and is putting our freedoms at risk,” Haley continued.
She spoke about the importance of the 2024 election from the perspective of foreign policy, which is what she does best: “When Barack Obama was president, Vladimir Putin invaded Crimea,” Haley recalled. “When Joe Biden was president, Putin invaded all of Ukraine. But when Donald Trump was president, Putin did nothing. There was no invasion, no war. And that was not an accident.”
Haley continued, “The reason President Putin didn’t attack Ukraine is because he knew Donald Trump was a tough guy. Strong presidents don’t start wars. Strong presidents prevent wars.”
She turned to the Middle East, where Iran’s terrorist proxies are rampant. “Again, compare Trump to Biden,” Haley said. “Trump got us out of the insane Iran nuclear deal. … Iran was too weak to start a war. They knew and were afraid Trump was too weak.”
Haley ended with an impassioned appeal for unity.
“To save America, we must be strong. … Foreign enemies win when they see Americans hate one another, and they see it today, whether on a college campus or in the fields of Butler, Pennsylvania.
“Now is our chance to put our differences aside and focus on what unites us and makes our country stronger.
Let’s come together as a party, let’s come together as people, and let’s come together as one strong, proud country. Let’s show our children, and show the world, that even on our worst day, we are lucky to live in America.
